Thun
There is a point at which you say “it’s done — ship it”. So it is with this painting. Any further dibs and dabs will just make it worse.
At first glance it seems to be a nice painting. Me, being a perfectionist though, sees all the warts and mistakes, so I have to force myself to let it go. This feeling is perhaps best summarized by a song lyric from 1990:
She ain’t pretty, she just looks that way
— Northern Pikes
The idea was to capture the flavour of Thun, Switzerland. It is a very picturesque town, mostly dominated by the Schloss (castle) on the hill. The client sent a low res image taken from the Rathausplatz (city hall square) as an idea.
I couldn’t really work directly from that, but fortunately that location and line of sight is very common on the internet. The final view is a composite, with the Henkertürmli (hangman’s tower) and Rathausbrunnen (city hall fountain) jammed in as needed.
I wish I could paint clouds, trees, cobblestones, roofing tiles, etc. etc.
